If Dabo Swinney wanted to reassure Clemson fans that the Tigers were back on track to being one of the nation’s elite teams, he failed miserably in the opener.
Georgia throttled Clemson 34-3 in a listless embarrassing performance for Clemson.
The Tigers looked like exactly the same team post Trevor Lawrence with average QB play, erratic play calling, lack of playmaking ability at wideout, and inconsistent offensive line play. Let’s not forget the sloppy penalties. Whatever Clemson has practiced in the spring and August would be a great question because it did look like a familiar story.
Here’s the more disconcerting part if you’re a Clemson fan. The defense front 11 was solid and played well for a half. That would scream a lack of depth as Georgia mowed down the Clemson defense in the second half in outscoring Clemson 28-0.
Another kick in the teeth is finding out Clemson is using athletic donations to help fund their lawsuit either directly or indirectly then producing a product like we just saw. How about taking some of that near $500K and growing to find some new assistants?
Asking for donations that don’t help the current student-athlete is a dicey proposition when your brand football program gets embarrassed on a national stage.
A FOIA request has revealed that Clemson’s legal fees are larger than previously estimated.
Dollars are being spent by the athletic department to fight the ACC. But IPTAY is covering dollars above that.
The combined bill is already over $1 million.https://t.co/s7TGAg1gSq

Now could Clemson turn things around? Sure with the 12 team playoff, and the ACC Champion being an automatic bid Clemson can get better. Does anyone feel confident in that though? We’re now years into the same issues and the problems are simply not get resolved.
Don’t look now but Clemson hosts P4 giant killer Appalachian State Saturday night. Clemson can’t out-talent decent teams anymore. Another performance like Saturday and it won’t be a 34-3 loss. Georgia is on another level, but it will get you beat.
Clemson seems farther away than ever from the elite of college football.
