Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
Is this basically everything the New York Times (NYT) figuratively dies?
No one thinks much very much of the NYT anymore, to be frank, and we can have a complete separate conversation about this – but they did once have a decent sports section. In February 2022, the NYT bought the Athletic for $550 million. Since then, there’s been an exodus of really good writers.

Kaboly’s announcement comes on the heels of college football writers Ari Wasserman, Max Olson and Nicole Auerbach announcing their own departures from The Athletic. Olson has since announced he’s returning to ESPN, while Wasserman and Auerbach’s destinations have yet to be made public.
The NYT hasn’t really learned the lesson here, it seems. I get that media companies are trying to return to profitability – and I understand that you should pay for good journalism – but if you’re not giving your consumers what they are interested in, then why should you pay for it? I’m hoping that Manny Navaro will still be with the Athletic (he’s one of the few good college football writers there). But count me in as the NYT maintaining dumpster fire status.
