ACC 2024 Football Schedule

California

It’s a new era for Cal football. The Pac12 is in the rearview mirror, and it’s on to the ACC. If there is an ACC program I’d compare to Cal it would be Boston College. Rarely awful, but rarely very good. They just seem to hover between 5 and 6 wins year after year. Will they be able to get over the hump in the ACC? Justin Wilcox has been head coach at Cal since 2017 and it’s probably time he starts producing more than mediocre results. He’s got one of the best running backs in the ACC Jaydn Ott to help him out too.

Will Go 8-4 (4-4) if:

The defense takes a step forward. Cal was a mess defensively last year ranking 102 in total defense and 111th in scoring. Ranking 128th in pass defense last year in a league with as many good quarterbacks as the ACC is a big concern. Let’s say the defense can just be average though, the offense with Ott, and the young but talented QB Fernando Mendoza could be really solid. If Cal can sneak a win out at Auburn, and it was a competitive game last year, then they could start the year 3-0. The back half of the schedule is reasonable with games against Oregon State, at Wake Forest, Syracuse, Stanford, and at SMU then throw an upset in there along the way and Cal could find its way to a solid 8-4 season.

Will Go 4-8 (2-6) if:

Jaydn Ott becomes a one-man show. Jaydn Ott is locked in a potential All-ACC maybe even All-American running back, but he needs help. If he doesn’t get it, Cal is in big trouble. With games at Auburn, at Florida State, then hosting Miami Cal could start the season 2-3 or 1-4. The back half of the schedule is easier, but not one Ott can carry through all by himself. The defense if it is as bad as it was last year could spell disaster for the Bears.
