ACC Basketball Coach Hotseat Rankings after the season

We have finished the college basketball season, and it’s time to take a look at how the ACC Hotseat finished.

We go from coldest to hottest.

0 – Ice Cold Seat

1 – Still cool

2 – There’s smoke

3 – Getting Warm

4 – On Fire

5 – Start working on the resume

Pat Kelsey, Louisville = 0

Pat Kelsey replaces one of the worst coaches in Kenny Payne we’ve ever seen in the ACC. Kelsey was quietly a very solid hire for Louisville. At Charleston, he went 58-12 in the last 2 years with 2 NCAA appearances. How can there be a hotseat, he hasn’t even coached a game yet at Louisville.

Adrian Autry, Syracuse = 0

Syracuse made a late run at the NCAA picture to finish 19-12 (11-9) under Adrian Autry. Autry showed enough to create hope for Syracuse fans.

Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech = 0

When Georgia Tech was on they could play with anyone on their schedule. They beat 3 teams UNC, Duke, and Clemson that made the Sweet 16 or better, and they beat another NCAA Team in Mississippi State. There were some bad losses too, but you have to like the ceiling Stoudamire showed. He’s fine.

Micah Shrewsberry, Notre Dame  = 0

Notre Dame was one of the toughest outs in the ACC by the end of the year even if the record was only 13-20 (7-13). Shrewsberry put his stamp on Notre Dame, and the trajectory looks pretty good.

Tony Bennett, Virginia  = .5

Virginia made the NCAAs, but became unfair or not became the poster child for a team that should have been left out of the NCAA field. I don’t agree, but the program does seem to need an infusion of talent if Virginia is going to return to its elite status of a few years ago.

Earl Grant, Boston College  = .5

Earl Grant is treading water a bit at Boston College after three seasons and no NCAA appearances. BC hasn’t been bad, but all the players hitting the transfer portal has to be a concern.

Jon Scheyer, Duke  = .5

Jon Scheyer and Duke came within a game of making the Final Four. That’s good at other schools, but this  is Duke who also got swept by UNC. There’s no hotseat, but we’re watching.

Jim Larranaga, Miami = .5

Jim Larranaga had an ugly 15-17 (6-14) season. Yes, there were injuries, but it was a massively disappointing season. Larranaga and Miami are still only a year removed from the Final 4 though.

Kevin Keatts, NC State = 1

It was an astonishing finish for NC State and Kevin Keatts. From off the NCAA radar to ACC Title and Final 4. While 1 season doesn’t erase every bit of Keatts’s previous seasons, it did wonders for his job status. He’s probably at a 4 before the ACC Tournament.

Hubert Davis, UNC  = 1

UNC has a nice rebound season earning a #1 seed, and being the ACC’s best regular season team has Davis “mostly” back in the good graces of UNC fans. A deeper run than the Sweet 16 would have been nice though.

Brad Brownell, Clemson – 1.5

Clemson was solid all year and finished the year with an Elite 8 run. It is only one year for the perpetually hotseated Brownell, but you can’t deny this season which was one the best in Clemson history.

Jeff Capel, Pittsburgh  = 2

Pitt fans are in general pretty happy with Jeff Capel. Pitt should have made the NCAA tournament, but that’s still just 1 appearance in 6 years.

Mike Young, Virginia Tech  = 2

Virginia Tech missed the NCAA tournament for the 2nd year in a row, and a ton of players have hit the portal. Young is two years removed from the ACC Title, but there might be Josh Pastner vibes starting to form with a lightning in a bottle championship.

Steve Forbes, Wake Forest  = 2.5

Wake Forest was an NCAA-quality team, but when you don’t make it you dont’ make it. Forbes is now 4 years into his Wake Forest tenure and hasn’t made the NCAA tournament. Forbes needs to make the NCAA real soon.

Leonard Hamilton, FSU = 4

Leonard Hamilton has been an institution at FSU, but the last few years have been a struggle. We’re looking at 3 straight years that FSU has missed the NCAA Tournament, and they haven’t been even close.
