It’s part 5 in our ongoing series of the ACC’s two biggest bubble teams.
Who is going to make Wake Forest or Pitt? Do both make it, neither?
Is anyone else close?
Syracuse is 19-11 (11-9), but with a NET of 84 probably probably needs a run to the ACCT finals even to get a look.
Virginia Tech is now 18-13 (10-10) and their NET is 54, but they also have 3 Q1 wins. They are still too far back to be really on the bubble, but the wins over Iowa State and Boise State carry weight. If the Hokies win 2 ACCT games, they will get a good look, but they definitely need to make a statement this upcoming week.
That still leaves Wake Forest and Pittsburgh as ACC teams that realistically can play their way into the NCAA Tournament.
What do they need to do?
Wake Forest 19-12 (11-9) Net 41
Ok, Wake Forest got the MUST win over Clemson. That’s a Q1 win, but here is a bit of bad luck. Florida was 28 in the NET going into Saturday and lost to a really bad Vanderbilt team. That will surely knock Florida out of the top 30 and cost the Deacs a Q1 win. They have 2 Q1 wins in total.
That said a bunch of bubble teams lost Saturday – TCU, Memphis, Mississippi State, Villanova, Utah, and Providence.
Their win over Clemson should move Wake Forest into the top 40 in the NET. Are they in the field? The win over Clemson stopped the bleeding, but the Deacs aren’t safe yet. Their loss Tuesday to Georgia Tech ensured they’ll have to do some work in the ACC Tournament.
Pittsburgh 21-10 (12-8) Net 43
Pittsburgh has won 11 of their 14 games and earned a double BYE into the ACC tournament. They have put themselves in a position to get an at Large bid. Like Wake Forest, they have 2 Q1 wins and benefited from the carnage Saturday from the bubble.
So here we go for the ACC Tournament Pitt is the 4 seed and Wake Forest is the 5 seed.
Wake Forest plays the dangerous winner of the Notre Dame / Georgia Tech game. I would recommend Wake Forest not lose that game, and if they win that game the matchup with Pittsburgh could be for a NCAA bid.
