What do Wake Forest and Pittsburgh ‘realistically’ need to do to get to NCAAs. (Part 4)

We continue the ACC’s most intriguing bubble watch today.

Who is going to make Wake Forest or Pitt? Do both make it, neither?

Is anyone else close?

Syracuse is 19-11 (11-9), but with a NET of 84 probably probably needs a run to the ACCT finals even to get a look.

Virginia Tech is 17-13 (9-10) and their NET is 54, but they also have 3 Q1 wins, and if they beat Notre Dame at home, they could get a look with a deep ACCT tournament run. You can’t quite ignore Virginia Tech.

That still leaves Wake Forest and Pittsburgh as ACC teams that realistically can play their way into the NCAA Tournament.

What do they need to do?

Wake Forest 18-12 (10-9) Net 41

The nightmare since beating Duke continues for Wake Forest. After losing at Notre Dame and at Virginia Tech, the Deacs were clearly leaking oil. Back in the friendly confines of Joel Coliseum Wake Forest was supposed to right the ship against Georgia Tech.

A complete meltdown ensued as Wake Forest fell behind 26-7 to Georgia Tech. The Deacs made a spirited comeback to get back in it, but couldn’t close out the comeback and lost 70-69. Georgia Tech to their credit can beat anyone they face, and they played confident, loose, and inspired. They were everything Wake Forest wasn’t. Now the Deacs must beat Clemson Saturday night to get back on the bubble. Would they be in the Big Dance with a Clemson win? Maybe, it’s hard to say they better win that game and another in the ACCT.

Wake Forest has really made a mess of things.

Pittsburgh 20-10 (11-8) Net 44

Pittsburgh is doing what they need to do. They’ve won 10 of their last gamesame, with multiple road victories. They only have 2 Q1 wins which is a bit concerning, but a lot is working in their favor. They are playing well, and their NET ranking isn’t that bad.

If they beat NC State at home to give Pittsburgh a 21-10 (12-8) finish with a NET that would be in the high 30s or low 40s. I do like their chances of getting in, but winning another game in the ACCT certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Wake Forest’s collapse may have ensured the ACC can’t get more than 6 teams in the Big Dance without some wild results.

Do you know who faces dangerous and erratic Georgia Tech next? Offensively challenged and on the bubble Virginia. Could Georgia Tech knock off another ACC bubble team on the road?

With the ACC Tournament next things are just getting started.
