ACC and SEC baseball should split or ask for more autobids.

There is a story circulating about the Big 10/SEC working towards more Autobids in college football as we see below.

Why don’t start applying to other sports? It’s fair, right? Take the two biggest most successful conferences in a particular sport and either split off to play their own tournament or more autobids.

Let’s try college baseball. From https://www.warrennolan.com/baseball/2024/elo-conference we see that the ACC and SEC are a combined 178-44 against nonconference opposition. The ACC has a winning clip of 81% while the SEC is at 79%. There is not another conference above 65%. The ACC and SEC are generally regarded as year in and year out the best college baseball leagues in the country.

Therefore the ACC and SEC should get more than 1 autobid. How about 4? That’s a good round number. The last time a current Big 10 team won a title was 1966 with Ohio State. Even with new members, it’s been a decade since UCLA won a title in 2013.

Let’s go ahead and do this in college basketball.

In the last decade, the ACC teams have 3 National Titles and 7 Final Four Teams. The Big 12 has 2 National Titles and 5 Final Four teams.  Big East teams have 4 National Titles and 6 national titles. That’s 90% of the national titles and nearly half of the Final Four teams. The SEC and Big 10 have 0 national titles.

Let’s have multiple autobids or split off to their own tournament for the ACC, Big 12, and Big East.

See how easy this is? Pick some random metric that favors your narrative, and make your playoff rules.

It’s awesome! Do the SEC and Big 10 have the guts to allow this in other sports.

We all know the answer to that.
