As we move along with conference season, we ask the three biggest ACC basketball questions for this week.
Who takes a major step forward this week Virginia or Virginia Tech?
Virginia and Virginia Tech are both sitting in a precarious position at 2-3 in the ACC. The good news is both have some quality OOC wins meaning that finishing around .500 in the ACC probably lands them in the NCAAs. Funny we say that because they play each other this week at Virginia. The Hoos have been a different team at home vs the road, and they play at erratice but dangerous Georgia Tech on Saturday. Virginia Tech has to play on the road too at NC State. I have to lean toward Virginia because they get the toss-up game at home. Georgia Tech is having its own problems closing out games, but got a boost of confidence winning at Clemson. What a huge week ahead.
Is Florida State for real?
If FSU hadn’t lost to Libscomb, they would be on a 7 game-winning streak. That said they’ve won 4 in a row, including wins over Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. They also have a road win at Notre Dame. If they can get a split at Miami and a home game at Clemson, then they’ll sit 11-7 (5-2). The Noles have certainly made some noise in recent weeks, and look like a team that can finish in the upper half of the ACC. Now NCAA picture, we have to check back in a few weeks.
How close is NC State to the bubble after Wake Forest’s win?
NC State got a nice home win over Wake Forest to get to 13-4 (5-1). They currently are ranked NET 73 and RPI 66. I think they are on the bubble, but in a similar position to Clemson last year with non-conference SOS at 255. Even winning 12 ACC games, might not be enough because of the lack of OOC wins. They get Duke at home, and road wins are valuable. NC State gets Virginia Tech at home. That’s another big game.
