Is North Carolina headed towards another 2nd half of season collapse?

Last season North Carolina started the year 9-1 lost to Georgia Tech and didn’t win another game. Last week North Carolina was 6-0, and lost to previously winless in the ACC Virginia.

We spoke about it in our power poll, would that Virginia loss derail North Carolina’s season?

The early returns are North Carolina is in trouble. Up 42-32 in the 4th quarter against Georgia Tech, the North Carolina Tar Heels defense completely laid down. Georgia Tech ran it down the Tar Heel throat to the tune of a whopping 245 rushing yards in the 4th quarter, and 348 yards total for the game.

On a night Georgia Tech honored Paul Johnson, Johnson had to have loved what he saw.

Mack Brown on the other hand has to be wondering what is going on with his defense.

Last week they gave up 228 on the ground to Virginia, and now 348 to Georgia Tech.

It really looked like early in the year that the Tar Heels defense had turned the corner and at least wasn’t a liability. It has reverted to the unit from last year – soft, undisciplined, and sloppy.

With the amount of talent on the offensive side the ball including a future pro in QB Drake Maye, and weapons galore, the UNC defense only needed to be average. It’s becomes a trainwreck.

Next week UNC plays Campbell which should allow them to halt the 2 game losing streak. Then they host Duke, head to Clemson, and go to NC State. UNC is just as likely to finish 10-2 as 7-5 with that schedule.

How does Mack Brown right the ship with a defense that suddenly can’t stop anyone?

If he can’t figure it out, North Carolina will be headed towards another second half collapse, and questions about where the program is headed will start again. There is too much talent on UNC’s team to let this happen in back to back years.
