A week ago Louisville was the toast of college football. They had played a near-perfect 2nd half against a good Notre Dame team and produced the Cardinal’s biggest win in years. There were whispers of a possible ACC Title game and a 2023 TCU-like run.
It all came to a screeching halt in a disaster of a game at previously 1-4 Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh to their credit played an opportunistic game stuffing the Cardinals each time they threatened in Panther territory in the 2nd half. The change in QB to Christian Veilleux seemed to light a fire in Pitt, who finally looked like the team that we thought could be a contender in the ACC.
Louisville for their part was probably playing on borrowed time, and above their weight class getting to 6-0 and in the top 15. There is no sugar-coating this loss: This is the worst ACC regular season in-conference loss for any team this season. This is a bad Pittsburgh team that lost to Cincinnati.
This looked like a dangerous game from the start. Louisville appeared spent from last week, played sloppy, made bizarre coaching decisions, and let Pittsburgh dictate the entire game flow.
What was Jeff Brohm thinking going for it on 4th down inside his own 40 up 21-14? Louisville was stopped, and simply never recovered after that point.
This is a team that was fortunate to escape Georgia Tech, Indiana, and NC State with some of their inconsistent play.
That said you can’t take away the record or the epic performance against the Irish.
The 6-1 start and a top 25 ranking is still more than anything any Louisville fan could have hoped for, but Saturday was a hard lesson for Jeff Brohm and his Cardinals.
