Just a few weeks ago Virginia Tech was 1-3, and many of us wondered if the Hokies were the worst team in the ACC this side of Charlottesville.
Was Brent Pry going to be on the hot seat? Was he going to lose the team? Was Virginia Tech headed to a 2 or 3-win season?
It’s 3 weeks later and while Virginia Tech is still a long way from a finished product, but they are showing real signs of improvement and getting better.
The defense 3 weeks ago held Pittsburgh to 273 total yards in a 38-21 win.
Then down in Tallahassee against a playoff-caliber opponent in FSU, it was just 22-17 Noles early in the third quarter. It was relatively competitive most of the game until FSU’s superior depth and talent were just too much.
Saturday was going to be the real litmus test of where Virginia Tech was at.
A very beatable, but tricky Wake Forest team was coming to Blacksburg.
Win and there would be no question, Virginia Tech was closer to the middle of the ACC than the bottom. Lose and you would really be wondering how long this restoration project would take.
Make no mistake Virginia Tech has the better team Saturday. They controlled the game action pretty much from start to finish, but in the 3rd quarter, it was just 17-10 Hokies. This was the point recent Virginia Tech teams started cracking.
The Hokies never cracked against the Deacs.
Led by QB Kyron Drones and his 321 yards passing and 2 TD, and a defense that stuffed Wake Forest all day Virginia Tech the game’s final 30-13 score ended up reflecting how much Virginia Tech actually dominated things today.
Suddenly Virginia Tech can think about a possible bowl game again.
Virginia Tech’s next game is against a Syracuse team coming in off a three-game losing streak.
This is an absolute must-win for the Hokies at home as the schedule finishes with Louisville, Boston College, NC State, and Virginia. You have to think Boston College and Virginia in addition to Syracuse are Virginia Tech’s best chances to get to 6 wins.
Virginia Tech was never going to be great this year, they just wanted to get to the 2nd half of the season with a shot at a bowl.
Brent Pry has them there.
