Grading the ACC Football Coaching jobs at the near mid-point of season. (Part 1)

We are just about at the midpoint of the college football season, so let’s give some grades on how these ACC Coaches are doing so far.

Dave Clawson, Wake Forest – C

Dave Clawson is one of the best coaches in the ACC, but I would say he’s done better coaching jobs in past years. Wake Forest is 3-2 but 0-2 in the ACC. There was a nice effort against Vanderbilt, but overall Wake Forest has been unusually sloppy. They had seven turnovers between the near loss to Old Dominion and an ugly 30-16 home loss to Georgia Tech.

Jeff Hafley, Boston College – C

Boston College and the job Jeff Hafley has done is tricky to judge. The Eagles sit 3-3 with a loss to Northern Illinois, but a near win over Florida State. They’ve also won their last two games over Virginia and Army. BC hasn’t won a game of note, but a bowl game game is still in site and QB Thomas Castellanos is a headache to deal with. It hasn’t been great for Hafley, but not all bad either.

Dabo Swinney, Clemson – C-

Clemson has a decent enough 4-2 record, but when you’re Clemson and started the year in the top 10 only to fall out of the rankings before the leaves change, that’s not good. Clemson’s red zone offense was a mess against Duke, the FG kicking is a wreck, and they collapsed late at home against Florida State. Dabo Swinny hasn’t got the most out of his team.

Brent Pry, Virginia Tech – C-

Virginia Tech looked ready to give Virginia a run for the worst team in the ACC, but there are signs Brent Pry may be starting to find something positive to work with. After a 1-3 start, Virginia Tech looked solid against Pittsburgh. They went to Florida State, and it was a relatively competitive game where the Hokies only trailed 22-17 in the 3rd quarter.

Tony Elliot, Virginia – D

The only reason I don’t give Tony Elliot an F is because expectations for Virginia were already really low but 1-5 (0-2) is still 1-5. The schedule has been tough, and there have been moments when the Hoos have looked competitive. The loss to James Madison is inexcusable, and they let winnable games against NC State and Boston College getaway. They are the ACC’s worst team, it looks like it will stay that way for a while too.

Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh – F

Pat Narduzzi has had quite a bit of ACC success in the last few years. This year he hasn’t pushed any of the right buttons and is off to a 1-4 (0-2) start. Pittsburgh has lost 4 games in a row including a listless effort in getting blown out at Virginia Tech. Phil Jurkovec didn’t work out at all at QB and the Panthers have been the ACC’s most disappointing team.
