It’s crazy how fast the college football season is going.
We’re already 3 weeks into the season, and it’s time to take stock of the ACC.
The Good
The ACC isn’t just Clemson and or Florida State. The conference goes 9-10 quality teams deep.
Against the rest of the power 5 P5, the ACC is a very respectable 8-7 with an 8-5 record against the Big 10 and SEC. The conference showed signs of improvement from last year and it has continued this year. If you are still beating up the ACC as a conference that is lacking across the board it’s clear you aren’t following the actual results.
UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, Louisville, Syracuse, Miami, Florida State are 3-0. Half the ACC is undefeated and each of these teams has a P5 win OOC, which makes up part of the previous statement.
The ACC has 4 ranked teams in one poll and 5 ranked teams in the other.
The conference has started the season in such a way that it cannot be ignored going forward this season.
The Bad
At 1-2, Pittsburgh might be the ACC’s single most disappointing team. They lost at home to a Cincinnati team that just got beat by Miami (Ohio). Phil Jurkovec has been a disaster at QB, and a team some thought could be a dark horse in the ACC looks like one of the ACC’s bottom Tier Teams.
Football in the Commonwealth is a trainwreck. Virginia and Virginia Tech are at their lowest combined point that I can remember. Virginia is winless and looks clueless. Virginia Tech appears physically overmatched against P5 teams.
Remember that 8-7 record against P5 teams? Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Pittsburgh have accounted for 6 of the losses.
The Ugly
Georgia Tech is getting fine play from their QB Haynes King and the offense is much-improved ranking in the top 15 in the country, but the defense looks Ted Roofesque. The Jacket’s defense ranks 113th in the nation and 13th in ACC just ahead of the mess at Virginia.
Clemson failed to score 3 times inside Duke’s 5 yard line on a Labor Day nightmare of a game. So stunning was this result that despite two blowout wins against inferior opponents, the Tigers really haven’t restored anyone’s faith that the offense is any better than the previous 2 years. We’ll see against Florida State this week.
