With 2 weeks before the season begins, here are our preseason ACC rankings.
14. Virginia
Nobody has more question marks going into the season than Virginia, but who did we think that about last year? Duke they went 9-4.
13. Boston College
If Boston College loses to Northern Illinois in week 1, it might be curtains for head coach Jeff Hafley.
12. Syracuse
QB Garrett Shrader and TE Orande Gadson might form the most underrated 1-2 offensive combo in the ACC. Dino Babers needs to show something this season.
11. Virginia Tech
We’ll know more about Virginia Tech when they face Purdue in week 2, but they can’t overlook Old Dominion in week 1.
10. Georgia Tech
If Georgia Tech is to make a bowl, beating Louisville would a long way. There’s renewed optimism in Atlanta with Brent Key now in his first full year.
9. Wake Forest
Wake Forest has a ton of players to replace including QB Sam Hartman, but with Elon, Vanderbilt, and at Old Dominion, the Deacs could work themselves into their schedule.
8. Louisville
If Louisville can get by Georgia Tech in week 1, they could start the year 5-0. Louisville fans have been waiting for Jeff Brohm to return for a long time and now he’s back.
7. Miami
Miami (Ohio) was a bowl team last year, but if the Canes struggle in this one that would be a bad sign with Texas A&M the next week. The Canes should be better than last year, but we seem to always be saying that.
6. Duke
Duke could shock the world on Labor Day when they face Clemson. Don’t think they can’t do it either.
5. Pittsburgh
I think Pittsburgh is really being slept on. Wofford is a good warm-up before Cincinnati. Pat Narduzzi has built a solid foundation.
4. North Carolina
North Carolina has a huge opportunity to validate their their top 25 preseason ranking against a decent South Carolina team in week 1. It would be Mack Brown’s best OOC win since returning to North Carolina.
3. NC State
Where NC State is really at will be determined in Week 2 against Notre Dame at home. I would like to the see offense play well in week 1 against UCONN, but I’m not worried about the defense at all.
2. Clemson
Clemson has a real test opening weekend at Duke. The Tigers feel good about their offense, but we’ll have to see it to believe it.
1. Florida State
I think Florida State has the best offensive and best defensive players in the ACC. With that combination, I have them atop the ACC going into the season. That game with LSU will have the nation watching.
