Please: A.) Do Not Drink and Drive and B.) Let’s Hope Bob Huggins Gets The Help He Needs

Good evening.  If you are like @TalkinACCSports and I, you absolutely miss college football in a big way 😉  But you are enjoying the NCAA’s College World Series – and Jeff has blogged a lot about on the site.  You might also be checking out the Men’s U.S. Open Golf Championship tournament, as well.  Additionally, the Canadian Football League (CFL) just announced its U.S. broadcast television schedule, as well.  Finally, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football men’s final is on Sunday, June 20, 2023 at 8:30 PM EST – the U.S. takes on Canada.  So, there are a few sporting events that you can catch – and, trust me, I will be watching the CFL lol.

Don’t drink and drive.  Let tell you a personal story here:  Several years ago, I had worked on a weekend, which is rare for me in my position – I worked for 12 hours on a Saturday.  All I wanted to do after that extra work day was to have a steak with a friend and then go home to bed.  I was working in Arlington, VA at the time – and I lived in Montgomery County, MD – so I convinced a friend that we should drive to the Gaithersburg, MD microbrewery – and have a steak.  I think I had 3/4 of one beer (I barely drank anything) – and I was 20 pounds heavier than I am now.  My friend and I decided to leave – and I was going to drive him back to his home in Arlington, VA – when I accidentally turned right – when it was prohibited at that specific traffic signal (it was right out of the microbrewery parking lot). Instantaneously, I was stopped by the Montgomery County, MD Police.  They asked me if I was  drinking – and I told them that I had 3/4 of a beer (not even a full beer – like 12 of 16 ounces).  They then he asked me to get out of the car and walk forward in a straight line and then walk backwards.  Everything was fine.  Then, I was asked to recite the alphabet backwards (sometimes, I think people would have difficulty with that if the slept 10 hours straight and woke up well rested, but I digress here).  I did what the police officer asked me to do.  Then, he asked me to take a breathalyzer test, which I did – and I passed, I think I blew a .02, which is well below the legal limit.  The officer than asked me to drive down to the policy station with him because sometimes the car breathalyzer machine is not as conclusive as the equipment at the station.  I felt as those I was being harassed at that point – but I went with the police officer to the station because your life is in their hands (and it doesn’t go well for you if you refuse).  I then blew a .02 blood alcohol test at the station – and he gave me a turning on a red light when prohibited type of ticket.  I knew that I didn’t do anything wrong – but I quit drinking alcohol at that point in my life (and I hardly had any alcohol that day) because I saw what could happen to me if I did something wrong – it can affect your entire life.

We fast forward to West Virginia University (WVU) Men’s Basketball Coach, Bob Huggins. Huggins has not had a good six weeks – and much of it is self-inflicted.  In a radio interview, he used homphobic slurs towards Xavier fans.  Huggins apologized and he was sanctioned by WVU.  He was suspended for three games, agreed to counseling sessions, and West Virginia University officials divert his contract to a year-to-year deal.  But, this past Friday, Huggins was arrested in Pittsburgh, PA for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.  He apparently had a 0.21 blood to alcohol content.  This is a dangerous level of intoxication and one can put other lives at risk.  One can have drastically severe impairment, nausea, and even blackout when you’re at 0.21.  Huggins in 6’5″ and probably about 240 pounds – so that means he probably had about 14 beers when he was behind the driver’s side of a vehicle in Pittsburgh, PA.  I’ve never understood why millionaires (and anyone for that matter) can’t take an Uber, a Lyft, or a taxi to a hotel rather than drive – if they are going to drink a ton of alcohol.  This is Huggins’ second time getting a DUI.  While head men’s basketball coach at Cincinnati, he got a DUI in 2004 – and plead no contest.

I really want to see Huggins get help.  This 69-year old coach won 935 games – has two final fours – and was inducted into the Naismith hall of game.  He has a good legacy at places that aren’t easy to win at – and WVU is his alma mater.

It’s okay for us to say – don’t drink and drive – and we hope Bob Huggins gets the help he needs.
