The ACC’s three biggest men’s basketball questions for week of February 20, 2023

Are Clemson and UNC at-large NCAA Bids over?

Clemson took a devastating loss to Louisville to sit 19-8 (11-5) NET 81. UNC went winless this week to fall to 16-11 (8-8) NET 48.

Are Clemson and UNC’s at large NCAA bid chances over? The answer is not quite, but it’s getting close. UNC is probably in slightly better shape with a NET of more than 30 spots than Clemson, but they have zero Q1 wins.

If Clemson loses Syracuse at home this week, and UNC loses at Notre Dame then the at-large bids are toast.

Can Virginia win the ACC Regular season this week?

Virginia will finish the ACC regular season with reeling Clemson and last-place ACC team Louisville in the final week of the regular season. They have a 1 game lead in the loss column over Pittsburgh and Miami.

If Virginia sweeps their games this week, they may lock up the ACC’s top seed. They have to go on the road to Boston College and they also play at UNC this week. Boston College has proven quite the feisty team at home, and UNC is in desperate need of a quality win and will be at home. Virginia has hardly looked the part of the ACC’s top team in the last week, but they keep winning. I think it will catch up with them this week on the road against either BC or UNC, and Miami and Pitt will remain with a shot to win the ACC regular season.

Does Duke lock up an At-Large NCAA bid?

I think only Virginia can truly feel like they’ve locked up an NCAA At-Large bid in the ACC. I would put Miami very very close as well. Everyone else has work to do.

Duke can lock up a bid this week. With a NET of 25 and a record of 19-8 (10-6), if Duke sweeps home games with Louisville and Virginia Tech to go 21-8 (12-6) then Duke is just playing for seeding after that. Duke was 13-0 at home this year coming into the week, and I like their chances to make it 15-0. They already took care of Louisville Monday night, so if they finish off Virginia Tech later in the week and they’ll be dancing.
