Credit to Mike Young for the @HokiesMBB Defensive Turnaround

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.

I was very critical of Mike Young and the Virginia Tech men’s basketball defense earlier this week against a massively inferior Georgia Tech team (and in several prior games, too, the defense was non-existent).

Today, the Hokies turned it around against the first place team in the ACC, the Pittsburgh Panthers (who have now dropped to third place).

The Hokies probably played their best game on both ends of the court in ACC play today.  For example (stats courtesy of HokieSports.com):

  • Pittsburgh shot approximately 17% from three-point land – credit the Hokies defense for that horrendous percentage.
  • Virginia Tech 55.6% from the field – and 47.4% from three-point land. 17 assists for the Hokies.
  • The Hokies had 5 (!!) players in double figures.   I don’t know the last time that happened for Virginia Tech.
  • The Hokies had 11 turnovers – and Pitt had 9 turnovers.  That’s pretty respectable for both teams.  You like to keep the number below 10 if you’re the Hokies – but 11 is not terrible.
  • Rebounds were dead even at 30 for Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech – that’s a victory for the Hokies.

That’s a recipe for success.

And it’s maddening why the Hokies have such trouble with the bottom-tier ACC teams – like Boston College and Georgia Tech – but show up in a bit way against the top-tier teams at home.

Credit where credit is due – Congrats to the Hokies on the win. Mike Young got the team ready.
