ACC Basketball Mid-Season Coach Hotseat Rankings

How are those ACC hot seat rankings looking since we checked a month ago?

We go from the coldest to hottest.

0 – Ice Cold Seat

1 – Still cool

2 – There’s smoke

3 – Getting Warm

4 – On Fire

5 – Start working on the resume

Jon Scheyer, Duke  = 0

Jon Scheyer is in his first season. Duke is 14-5 and has been a little uneven, but nothing to get worked up over.

Tony Bennett, Virginia  = 0

Tony Bennett has Virginia 15-3. They are also the ACC’s highest-ranked team. Bennett is untouchable.

Jim Larranaga, Miami = 0

Miami is 15-4 and has one of the ACC’s best teams. The Canes are virtual NCAA lock barring a total collapse.

Hubert Davis, UNC  = 0

North Carolina hasn’t been the team many expected so, but unless the Heels miss the NCAA tournament Davis won’t be feeling any heat.

Mike Young, Virginia Tech  = .5

Young is coming off an ACC Title, but 1-7 in the ACC even with some injuries is still 1-7.

Steve Forbes, Wake Forest  = .5

Wake Forest is 14-6, but is probably on the bubble at the moment. There will be a little heat brewing if Forbes misses the NCAA tournament, but that’s still a ways off.

Leonard Hamilton, FSU = 1.5

FSU is as healthy as they’ve been all year and are starting to play like it at 5-4 in the ACC. They are still 7-13 and won’t make the NCAA tournament for a second straight year barring an ACC Title.

Jim Boeheim, Syracuse = 2

Jim Boeheim is going to leave Syracuse when he wants to, but if he could squeeze into the NCAA tournament there will be a lot fewer rumblings.

Brad Brownell, Clemson = 2

Clemson’s Brad Brownell started the season on the big-time hotseat, and now the Tigers lead the ACC with an 8-1 record. It could flip fast for Brownell if Clemson falls apart in the 2nd of half of the season, but at the moment he’s the ACC’s COY.

Earl Grant, Boston College  = 2.5

The heat won’t turn up on Earl Grant until next year 3. BC is 9-11 this year and certainly not among the worst ACC teams, but they are a long way from being a good team.

Kevin Keatts, NC State = 2.5

NC State is 15-5 and in a position to make the NCAA Tournament after Keatts started the season on the hot seat. Will Keatt’s status be determined by Terquavion Smith’s health though?

Kenny Payne, Louisville = 2.5

At 2-17, Kenny Payne is already feeling the heat in his first year. He probably wouldn’t be fired, but there’s a lot of frustration already growing.

Jeff Capel, Pittsburgh  = 3

Pittsburgh was going along just fine at the top of the ACC. Capel was working himself off a seat that started the season on fire. Then they lost 3 of their last 5 including a brutal loss to FSU at home putting a huge dent in their NCAA chances.

Mike Brey, Notre Dame  = 3

It’s gotten stale in Notre Dame, and while last year they made the NCAA tournament in 2022, the last few years have been rough for Mike Brey. His seat is warm, but since he’s retiring it doesn’t matter.

Josh Pastner, Georgia Tech = 3.5

Josh Pastner is staring at potentially 30+ ACC losses in the last two years. If Georgia Tech wasn’t broke, Pastner wouldn’t survive the season. They are, but Georgia Tech is looking at a dumpster fire of a season.
