Optimism for Louisville after bowl win and coaching change.

In a span of just a couple of months, Louisville football fans went from our football program is in shambles to hey I can’t until next season.

On October 1, 2022, Louisville lost 34-33 to a bad Boston College team to fall to 2-3. There was also a 24-point loss to Syracuse. Fans were ready to be done with HC Scott Satterfield whose seat was on fire at that point.

To his credit, Satterfield guided Louisville to wins in 5 of their last 7 games, but there was still an undercurrent of frustration with Satterfield, especially after another double-digit loss to Kentucky. His third in a row to them, and fourth overall for the program.

Satterfield had dalliances with other jobs at Louisville and was never fully embraced after that. Throw in the losses to Kentucky, and when Scott Satterfield bolted for Cincinnati, it was a day of celebration for Louisville fans.

Then when former Cardinal player and assistant coach Jeff Brohm returned to be HC via Purdue, Louisville fans got even more excited knowing they had upgraded at HC without even having to fire Satterfield.

A bowl game win would just be a bonus.

Whatever you think about opt-outs, coaching changes or anything else about bowl games winning them provides a good feeling heading into the off-season.

Louisville with interim HC Deion Branch looked as physical and tough against a credible team than at any time under Satterfield.

He did a great job preparing the Cardinals for this game.

They won 24-7 and ran for 281 yards. The defense held Cincinnati to just 127 total yards.

With so much staff and roster turnover, I’m not sure how meaningful the win is from an on-field perspective, but off-the-field it adds optimism.

That’s huge for a program that’s been treading water for years.

Jeff Brohm can walk into a recruit’s home off an 8-win potential top-25 season in a supposed down year, and sell what is possible.

Louisville also gets the ACC off to a much-needed good start to bowl season at 1-0. Now we’ll see if other ACC teams can follow suit.
