Georgia Tech stuns UNC because Brent Key never let his team quit.

Before anyone says Georgia Tech won because Josh Downs dropped a TD pass in the final minutes – well that score wouldn’t have clinched the game, and it’s how you take advantage of breaks that decide games.

After that play, Georgia Tech ran out the final couple of minutes by picking up necessary first downs to seal the stunning 21-17 upset victory over North Carolina.

Georgia Tech stands 5-6 and needs a win next week over the nation’s best team Georgia to reach a bowl game. Yea it’s unlikely as it sounds as the Jackets need back-to-back top 15 wins to reach the postseason. If Georgia Tech had just packed it in after an ugly loss to Miami last week, nobody would have thought less of them, but here is the thing.

Interim each Brent Key won’t let his team quit. He wouldn’t let them quit when Geoff Collins was fired and they played and beat top 25 ranked  Pitt. He wouldn’t let them quit when they trailed at Virginia Tech in the 4th quarter and came back for a 28-27 victory. He wouldn’t let them quit when they had nothing to play for except pride as they headed to Coastal Division champ UNC. He didn’t let QB Zach Gibson quit after a nightmare game against Virginia, then he was brought in Saturday and helped Georgia Tech to the upset win.

Brent Key’s future at Georgia Tech is unknown. Honestly, I am a no-lean, as I feel a clean start is necessary to rebuild the program. That said you can’t deny what Key has done in making Georgia Tech football watchable again. His kids play hard for him and love playing for him.

If in the end he gets hired, I can live with a short-term (3 years – 4 years max) incentive-laden deal. If he’s not hired though, he’ll be highly sought after to be a high-end assistant coach if not a head coach somewhere.
