Georgia Tech should thank Brent Key, but now move on in coaching search.

The Georgia Tech fan in me really appreciates what interim coach Brent Key did taking over the trainwreck that was Geoff Collins.

Key initially won 2 straight games over bowl-bound Pittsburgh and Duke teams. Georgia Tech was actually in some bowl projections for a week in October. For the first time pre-Collins, there was an optimistic feeling around Georgia Tech football.

That feeling didn’t last long after back-to-back losses to Virginia and Florida State. There was the comeback win at Virginia Tech that lifted the Jackets to 4 wins. Their most since 2018.

Saturday was a mess of a 35-14 loss to a bad Miami team that should close the book on the Brent Key era. North Carolina and Georgia are next, and those are likely two more losses for a 4-8 season. There are also stories of QB Jeff Sims being medically cleared to play, and not doing so.

Key instilled accountability at Georgia Tech and made the special teams a functional unit. He won as many games (3) in 5 games as Geoff Collins ever won. He deserves to be coaching at Power 5 school and showed enough to possibly be a future head coach.

It’s time though to completely close the book on the Geoff Collins era, and start fresh. That includes Key. If Key was willing to stay on the staff, I’d have him, but that doesn’t seem likely.

New Georgia Tech AD J Batt needs a national search and a clean slate. The stench of Collins left on the Georgia Tech program cannot be overstated. He destroyed the program.

Key was good and his effort commendable, but it wasn’t enough to earn the head coaching job.
