Brent Pry’s first year at Virginia Tech has concerning warning signs.

Virginia Tech fell to 2-7 after a second-half collapse to Georgia Tech 28-27. The Yellow Jackets have been gritty under Brent Key, but they came into this game with Zach Pyron at QB. Pyron was Georgia Tech’s 3rd string QB barely a month ago.

Playing at home the Hokies were up 27-16 in the 4th quarter in the Georgia Tech red zone when the wheels came off. The Hokies fumble, Georgia Tech recovers and scores a TD, and goes on to the win.

That’s the second game in a row that Virginia Tech held a double-digit second half lead and fell apart. Against NC State they led 21-3 in the 2nd half, before losing the game.

This isn’t bad luck, this is a trend and a possible warning sign for HC Brent Pry.

Nobody argues that Justin Fuente didn’t leave a mess behind for Pry. The Hokies roster is simply not very good. The lack of high-end talent is glaring, but Pry is not getting the most out of his team either. This isn’t to suggest Pry is in trouble. It’s his first season, and he’ll have ample time to turn things around.

That said when you see Mike Elko turn Duke into a bowl team in less than a season or interim coach Brent Key win 3 games in 5 outings at Georgia Tech then you can ask questions.

The Hokies have now lost 6 games in a row in every possible manner, blowouts, blown leads, and late comebacks falling short.

With a first-year coach, the goal is to see improvement as the season progresses.

Are we seeing that at Virginia Tech? Will we see it?

The Hokies still have to play at Duke and Liberty before the finale with Virginia.

Not only does Pry have to overhaul the roster, but he also has to reset the culture of losing Fuente established.

We haven’t seen it yet, as the Hokies just keep finding ways to lose games.
