Five games into Tony Elliot’s tenure at Virginia and the Hoos look like one of the two or three worst teams in the ACC. A listless 34-17 home loss to a mediocre Louisville team probably ensures Virginia is going to have a long long season.
Any discussion of the hot seat and Tony Elliot is out of the question. Elliot could lose every one of the rest of the games this season by 50 and be back – as he should be.
Can Virginia fans start having questions though? Is it too soon?
Virginia fans seem split already on whether there should be a concern at the 2-4 (0-3) start.
Here’s a sampling…
I still don’t think people realize how bad Virginia’s roster is. Even with that explosive offense they had last year, they were two missed field goals away from 4-8. This looks worse because of the lack of o-line talent.

Do you see UVA players quitting on this staff? Elliott is installing his system/culture. UVA isn’t a perennial winning program. These rushes to judgment are absurd!

Is it crazy to expect the same players to have recognizable performance compared to last season when they were good?

This is completely embarrassing.
Both the coaching (play calling and preparation) and the players (execution and penalties).
Fans don’t deserve this and are fully warranted for not spending time and money to watch this team.
Less than a month away until basketball season.

This is a tough call if Virginia fans should be concerned just yet.
There are countless examples of coaches with rough starts going on to great things, and there are plenty of examples of slow starts for coaches who never turned the corner.
I do think Tony Elliott is starting to feel frustrated at the comparisons from last year so he’s feeling the pressure.
“I’m tired of hearing about last year. Last year was last year.”
Tony Elliott on the comparisons between last year’s UVA team vs. this year.

We know his offensive line is brand new, and how that can affect a team even with a QB like Brennan Armstrong.
We’re seeing the same offensives issues with a new line at Boston College.
I think Virginia is at a point where Virginia fans can question some things, but telltale warning signs will be more evident by the end of the year if the Hoos don’t show any improvement in the 2nd half of the year.
