Pittsburgh survives WVU in a game that was everything a rivalry should be.

Brett Ciancia has been a podcast guest of ours, and his tweet says it all.

With National TV, Gameday, a sold-out crowd, historical rivals Pittsburgh and West Virginia put on a Thursday night show that reminded us all that nothing beats a good old fashioned rivalry game. While college football keeps moving towards the pageantry and tradition of UCLA vs Rutgers, Thursday night was a throwback.

Pittsburgh and West Virginia played a heart-stopping 38-31 thriller that featured momentum swings, great plays, bizarre plays, inspired play calls, and baffling play calls.

Does anyone think Neal Brown regrets not going for it on 4th down?

The game was a big win for ACC football, and we’ll get into that another time, but tonight was all about Pittsburgh.

For much of the game, West Virginia looked like the tougher more disciplined team. Their offensive line controlled a Pittsburgh defensive line that some called one of the best in the country.

Pittsburgh though showed a level of heart and guts that previous to the 2021 season they didn’t have.

The Panthers know how to win games. They do what winning programs do. They won without their best game against a quality opponent.

Kedon Slovis isn’t the most mobile QB, but he has an arm and he’s a QB that Pittsburgh can win a lot of games with.

The defense made the critical plays late including the above pick 6 even after struggling for large portions of the game.

We’ll see if Pitt can defeat a dangerous Tennessee team next week, but I think they are a better team than the one that played tonight.

Pitt found a way, and that will pay dividends the rest of the year.
