Virginia
Virginia got a surprise when head coach Bronco Mendenhall decided not to return as the Cavs head coach. Mendenhall had turned Virginia into a credible program since arriving in 2016, including an ACC Coastal title in 2019. Offensively Hoos became an absolute monster under Bronco, but now the program will be led by former Clemson assistant Tony Elliot. The Hoos are a true wildcard in the Coastal Division. QB Brennan Armstrong returns with a wealth of offensive weapons. The question mark will be on the defensive side of the ball where Virginia struggled last year. That will be Elliot’s challenge.
Will Go 10-2 (6-2) if:
Virginia can take advantage of a soft schedule. There’s no Clemson, no NC State, no Wake Forest, and out of conference, it is Richmond, Illinois, Old Dominion, and Coastal Carolina. It’s not a guarantee that Virginia wins all four of those OOC games, but they may very well be favored in each one. Brennan Armstrong is one of the best-returning QBs in the ACC, plus having arguably the best receiving core in the conference. The offense should still be able to put up a ton of points, and if the defense can just not be awful – watch out for the Hoos.
Will Go 6-6 (4-4) if:
The Virginia defense can’t improve from last season. As good as the Virginia offense was, the Virginia defense gave up points and yards just as fast. If that defense struggles again, the Hoos will be asking an awful lot of their offense to keep them in games especially with a just about brand new offensive line. While the schedule shouldn’t scare anyone Louisville, Miami, and Pittsburgh are problematic games. Virginia Tech owns Virginia no matter what the records are, and then with a couple of upsets, the Hoos could be staring at a disappointing 6-6 type season.
