Thoughts on the Athlon Sports 2022 All-ACC Football Team

One of the first 2022 All-ACC Football Teams has been released, and it is from Athlon Sports.

A few things stood out to me…

1) Clemson’s defense makes up nearly half of the 1st team defense, and if you add the 2nd team that’s more than half of their defense on the 1st or 2nd team. Brent Venables might not be there, but any level of competent coaching by Wes Goodwin will result in one of the nation’s top defensive units. If he does a good job coaching them, this is the best defense in the country. Clemson is loaded on that side of the ball.

2) All three NC State linebackers made All-ACC. Drake Thomas and Payton Wilson are on the 1st team, and Isaiah Moore is on the 3rd team. I’d actually have Moore now lower than 2nd team. This is the best linebacking crew in the ACC, and one of the best in the nation. The All-ACC team proves it.

3) Georgia Tech didn’t have a player on the 1st or 2nd All-ACC team and just 1 through the first three teams. Both were ACC lows. Geoff Collins needs a bowl season not to get fired, and he doesn’t have a lot to work with. The schedule is brutal, your best player left, you kept your trainwreck of a DC, and the team doesn’t have much talent. Good Luck Geoff.

4) Last year’s All-ACC teams from Athlon didn’t have a 1st or 2nd team player from Florida State. This year FSU had 2, but you get the idea. The Noles are still quite far away from being one of the better ACC teams. The rebuilding of talent at FSU is still very much a work in progress.

5) Pittsburgh is more than the departed WR Jordan Addison. 13 offensive and defensive players out of Pitt start 22 made one of the Athlon’s top 4 All-ACC teams. Yes, Addison was a loss, but the Panthers will still be a factor in the Coastal. There’s talent across the board on that team.
