Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
We rarely talk about the National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Playoffs on this site – but I was talking to @TalkinACCSports (my friend, Jeffrey Fann, pretty much gives me free rein on whatever I want to blog about) – and in this case, I think it’s necessary.
The NHL Stanley Cup’s Western Conference Finals between Colorado – and Edmonton will feature two teams that play at an incredibly high speed – and are among the highest scoring teams in the league.
Today, I would say – and had a conversation with @ameer43 and @MattZemek about this – that Edmonton has the best player in the world in Connor McDavid (which means he’s going to leave the Oilers franchise just like Wayne Gretzky did). Colorado seems to have a star-in-the-making in Nathan MacKinnon – and a player in Nazem Kadri, who is a crafty veteran that you need in these playoffs. More on McDavid and MacKinnon below:
Oilers defenseman Tyson Barrie, who played is his first eight NHL seasons with the Avalanche from 2011-19, knows what makes MacKinnon special.
“Getting to play with him and his work ethic and the way he prepares and treats his body reminds me a lot of [McDavid],” Barrie said. “They’re at the top of their game and they’re taking care of themselves to make sure they are at the top of their game. From a playing standpoint, you guys are watching like we are. He’s a powerful, skilled player that can do it all. He’ll be a handful, but nothing we can’t handle.”
I seriously think this is one of the best postseason series in many years. I’ll be interested to see how Edmonton handles the Colorado rush up the ice – but don’t kid yourself – as I said earlier, both teams are full of speed.
I’ll be watching every game of this series. I believe the winner of the West wins the Stanley Cup.
