As we move towards the end of the College Baseball, who is going to be a regional host?
Let’s look at the contenders.
RPIs are taken from https://www.warrennolan.com/baseball/2022/rpi-live
#5 Virginia Tech 31-10 (14-8)
The Hokies are in great shape. Anything above .500 the rest of the way and they will host. They probably get a top 8 seed by going 7-4 or better in the last 11 games.
#8 Notre Dame 28-10 (13-8)
Notre Dame is in great hosting position too. With 11 games to go just finish above .500 in those games.
#11 Florida State 26-15 (11-10)
The Noles have a great RPI, but they are going to probably need to win all three of their remaining series against Boston College, Miami, and North Carolina.
#14 Miami 32-12 (17-7)
Miami despite the series loss to Georgia Tech actually is in solid position to host. I think they only need to win 2 of their 3 remaining series against NDSU, Florida State and Notre Dame. Ok that might be a little tricky. They aren’t home free yet.
#17 Georgia Tech 27-18 (12-12)
Georgia Tech is a weird case. They are tied with Tennessee with the most Q1 wins in the country at 15, but with all those losses. I think they are going to need a 7-2 finish.
#20 Virginia 33-12 (14-10)
The Hoos have lost 3 of their last 4 series, and a top 8 seed is out of reach without probably nearly winning out. I think they’ll have to win the series against Clemson and Louisville to have a shot at regional hosting.
#22 Louisville 31-12 (14-7)
Louisville has a brutal finish at Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Virginia. They win all 3 series and they’ll host for sure, but that’s going to be tough.
#23 NC State 29-13 (11-9)
NC State is an interesting case. If they win their 3 series against UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest you have to throw them into the mix. They are probably in better shape than Florida State or Georgia Tech.
#28 Wake Forest 31-13 (10-11)
Mathematically Wake Forest still has a shot at hosting, but they are going need a couple of sweeps with Louisville, UNC, and NC State. That’s way too tall a task.
