End of the season ACC Basketball Coach Hotseat Rankings

We’ve reached the end of the college basketball season. Which ACC Coaches can feel comfortable in the off-season, and who might want to keep their realtor’s number handy?

We go from coldest to hottest.

0 – Ice Cold Seat

1 – Still cool

2 – There’s smoke

3 – Getting Warm

4 – On Fire

5 – Start working on the resume

Jon Scheyer, Duke  = 0

Jon Scheyer enters the season just fine at Duke. He’s never head coached a game at Duke. Following a legend though, this number could go up fast, but having the #1 recruiting class in the country will help ease the transition.

Tony Bennett, Virginia  = 0

Tony Bennett has so much success equity built in that he’s fine. Now if there’s another NIT or worse season, there will be whispers.

Earl Grant, Boston College  = 0

Earl Grant had an encouraging first season at BC. The solid play in the ACCT only helped that.

Steve Forbes, Wake Forest  = 0

There’s no hot seat for the ACC COY. Wake Forest exceed all expectations and very nearly made the NCAA Tournament.

Kenny Payne, Louisville = 0

Kenny Payne is left to pick up the pieces of the Chris Mack era. He’s been a popular hire though with Louisville fans.

Hubert Davis, UNC  = 0

Hubert Davis coached his tail off to turn the Tar Heels into the 2nd best team in college basketball. He is now fully embraced by the UNC faithful.

Jim Larranaga, Miami = 0

Any doubts about Jim Larranaga were erased after a remarkable run to the Elite 8. The man can still flat-out coach.

Mike Young, Virginia Tech  = 0

ACC Championship winning coaches don’t enter the next season on any hot seat. You can lose it fast though just ask Josh Pastner.

Leonard Hamilton, FSU = 1

The Noles had a disappointing year, but also a ton of injuries. We’ll see if Hamilton can right the ship next year, but I think he will.

Mike Brey, Notre Dame  = 1

Mike Brey’s seat was getting a little warm after 4 straight years of missed NCAA Tournaments. He made it this year and won a couple of games. That’s how you cool a seat.

Jim Boeheim, Syracuse = 1.5

Jim Boeheim only has another year or two to coach anyways, but Syracuse has been really average for a few years.

Josh Pastner, Georgia Tech – 2.5

If Geoff Collins wasn’t a total trainwreck, Pastner’s seat would be much hotter. In 4 out of his 6 seasons at Georgia Tech he’s finished 10th or worse in the ACC. He’s had just 1 NCAA Tournament caliber team in 6 seasons.

Brad Brownell, Clemson – 3.5

Clemson played well and the end of the year, but it may be a matter of too little too late for Tiger fans. If Brownell doesn’t make the NCAA’s next year that might be it for him at Clemson.

Kevin Keatts, NC State = 4.5

Most NC State athletic programs are in great shape. The men’s basketball program isn’t one of them. Keatts guided the Wolfpack to a last-place finish in the ACC and already has had several transfer departures. His seat is hot big-time.

Jeff Capel, Pittsburgh  = 4.5

Jeff Capel had his best-ever finish in the ACC in his 4 years at Pitt. The Panthers finished 11th. I think you get the idea how badly it’s going for Capel at Pittsburgh.
