North Carolina is one win from becoming college basketball’s current top program.

North Carolina is college basketball royalty. There’s no question about that, but there is always the debate of who is college basketball’s current top program? Is it Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, or UNC? How about a new recent entry like Villanova, Baylor, Virginia, or Gonzaga?

Let’s make this easy, it is what you do in March that separates you from the pack.

Gonzaga – you have no national titles, you can’t top this list no matter what you do in the regular season.

Baylor –  has the 2021 national title, but they are too new of an entry to be considered for college basketball’s top program.

Virginia – has the 2019 national title, and finished first in the ACC 5 times since 2014, but has just a single Final Four run.

Kentucky – It’s been 10 years since they’ve won a national title, but they sure seem proud of beating Kansas and UNC in the regular season this year. You’re better than that Kentucky.

Duke – The Blue Devils have 3 Final Fours and 2 National Titles since 2005, but they aren’t even the best program on Tobacco Road. Duke and Coach and K have been good, but not the best.

Kansas – There’s a good chance Kansas will be vacating a national title if they win it this year, but they’ll have fun while it lasts. They’ve dominated a strong Big 12 for years, and have a national title in 2008 and 4 Final Fours since 2005. They’ll have an argument if they beat UNC Monday.

Villanova – Now Villanova has to be in the discussion, especially due to their last 6 years, where they have 2 National Titles and 3 Final Fours. Jay Wright has turned Villanova into one of college basketball’s very best programs.

North Carolina – This brings us to Tar Heels. What were the sports betting odds, they’d be playing for their fourth national title since 2005?  Well here they are, and if they beat Kansas it ends all debate. The Heels have been to 6 Final Fours since 2005, and then a would add fourth national title in that timespan. No one else would have more than two. The last 6 years would match Villanova’s, and the previous 11 years would put North Carolina well ahead of Villanova.
