Wake Forest may see 2010 Virginia Tech as their NCAA future.

For much of the year, Wake Forest appeared to be a lock for the NCAA tournament, but a stunning 82-77 loss to Boston College to open their ACC tournament has left the Demon Deacons in a precarious position.

You would think a 23 win team from the ACC would be fine, but an ACC team with such a record has been left out before.

Back in 2010, a 23-8 Virginia Tech team was left out of the NCAA Tournament. The similarities are close enough, that Wake Forest fans may be sweating all the way to Selection Sunday.

What are the sports betting odds that Wake Forest suffers the same fate as Virginia Tech and gets left out?

Let’s compare the resumes of the two.

Wake Forest is 23-9, Virginia Tech was 23-8

The ACC had 1 top 10 team both years. That was Duke Blue Devils both years.

The ACC only had 1 other ranked team. In 2010 it was a Maryland team ranked 20th. This year it’s North Carolina ranked 25th.

Virginia Tech lost their opening ACCT game to 14th seeded Miami. Wake Forest lost their ACCT opening game to 13th seeded Boston College.

Virginia Tech was seeded 4th in the ACC Tournament. Wake Forest was seeded 5th.

They didn’t have NET rankings back in 2010, but what were the RPI rankings?

Virginia Tech’s RPI was 58, while Wake Forest’s is 75 with a current NET ranking of 39.

Even worse for Wake Forest is the ACC had 6 Top 50 RPI teams in 2010. The ACC has just 2 such teams this year.

A 3-4 finish doesn’t bode well for the Demon Deacons either.

Before digging into the numbers, I felt like Wake Forest was in reasonably good shape. I’m not so sure now.

Duke and UNC are locks for the NCAAs. Notre Dame is likely fine and finished two games ahead of them in the standings.

Miami swept Wake Forest.

Wake Forest is probably at best one of the last 4 or 5 teams in, at worst out, but mostly likely squarely on the bubble.

A handful of bid stealers will likely leave Wake Forest hosting an NIT game. If that happens they’ll look at a recent loss at Clemson and the defeat to Boston College as the reasons they end up watching the NCAA tournament on television.
