Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
We step out of the ACC today and bring you an update on the United States of America (USA) Winter Olympics Men’s Ice Hockey team. Team USA is absolutely rolling – and might be one of the fastest teams on the ice.
Team USA’s roster is largely composed of college players. Yes, you heard that right. Here is the roster. This roster of players has not played very long together as a unit. This is an understatement, at best. 14 days ago, this team was scattered in college campuses across the USA!! (h/t @WashingtonPost)
Thus far, Team USA is 2-0 in the 2022 Winter Olympics Group Play. Team USA absolutely drilled China 8-0 in the Winter Olympics. I wondered if China would ask for a running clock – and no, I’m not being sarcastic here. China has a bad men’s hockey team.
The most surprising event happened last night. Team USA played Team Canada – and the faceoff was very late. The game started after 11 PM EST – wasn’t really done until about 2 AM this morning. Canada has a veteran team – and I’m definitely downplaying my comment here. Most of Canada’s players are in the professional ranks. Team Canada is led by National Hockey League veteran, Eric Staal.
Last night, Team USA absolutely crushed Team Canada. The score was 4-2. It’s the first time in over a decade that Team USA defeated Team Canada. I watched the game from beginning to end – and I saw the slowest Team Canada team I’ve seen in decades. Team Canada could absolutely not handle the Team USA speed. It was ridiculous. Team USA was playing at an incredibly high level – and they have only been together for a short time. The only way that Team Canada scored was through two Team USA turnovers (and that’s going to happen when Team USA hasn’t played together all that long – they are still learning how to play together as a team). Not only did Team USA match Team Canada’s physical play, they ran our Canadian friends off the ice.
Team USA closes out group play vs. Germany at 8:10 AM EST on February 13, 2022 (this is tomorrow morning). Team USA should have a date in the quarterfinals. Clearly, Team USA is an underdog in the quarterfinals – but hey, who knows? Maybe watch for something special 😉
Rock on college hockey players!!
