ACC Basketball Coach Hotseat Rankings mid-way through conference season.

Back in December, we had a look at the ACC Basketball hot seat rankings. As we move halfway through the conference season, some coaches’ seats have cooled while others have heated up.

We go from coldest to hottest.

0 – Ice Cold Seat

1 – Still cool

2 – There’s smoke

3 – Getting Warm

4 – On Fire

5 – Start working on the resume

Mike Krzyzewski, Duke  = 0

Coach K is retiring this season, enough said.

Tony Bennett, Virginia  = 0

Tony Bennett has so much success equity built up, he’s fine even in a year where Virginia looks more like a NIT team. It happens. Now if it happens next year too, there might be a few whispers of frustration.

Earl Grant, Boston College  = 0

We knew Boston College was a major re-build and Grant is only in year one.

Steve Forbes, Wake Forest  = 0

What Steve Forbes has done in less than 2 years at Wake Forest is remarkable. This is one of the best passing teams in the ACC.

Hubert Davis, UNC  = .5

The expectations are so high at UNC, there are already some Tar Heel fans saying Davis might be in over his head. That said their 6 losses are all to NCAA caliber teams. Now don’t miss the NCAA tournament…

Leonard Hamilton, FSU = 1

Leonard Hamilton won’t nearly have the heat he would have had 4 or 5 years ago with a week like he just had losing to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. There’s also a sweep of Miami and a win over Duke.

Mike Young, Virginia Tech  = 1

The Hokies have been one of the ACC’s biggest disappointments, but it’s just the first time there have been questions about Young’s tenure. Young has largely over-achieved since he got to Blacksburg.

Jim Larranaga, Miami = 1

Jim Larranaga had some recent lean years, but he might have the ACC’s best team in 2021-2022. He’s probably the ACC’s leading COY candidate along with Steve Forbes.

Josh Pastner, Georgia Tech – 2

Georgia Tech is dead last in the ACC. Even if the Jackets just won the ACC Title, there are going to be questions because Georgia Tech only has had one NCAA appearance since Pastner got to Atlanta.

Mike Brey, Notre Dame  = 2

Things appeared to be getting stale in South Bend for Mike Brey, but now his team looks like it could make the NCAA tournament. If Brey doesn’t get the Irish to the Big Dance, this number goes back up.

Jim Boeheim, Syracuse = 2.5

Jim Boeheim might be a legendary coach, but the Cuse have floundered this year. Syracuse hasn’t won more than 18 games in 3 years.

Brad Brownell, Clemson – 3.5

Clemson is never really bad. They are just rarely ever really good. That mediocrity is wearing on Clemson fans.

Kevin Keatts, NC State = 4

NC State fans are just about done with Kevin Keatts. His tenure looks like a lot like Josh Pastners, but Pastner has an ACC Title on his resume.

Jeff Capel, Pittsburgh  = 4

Jeff Capel is headed towards his 4th straight year of having one of the worst teams in the ACC. There’s likely a change coming at Pitt.

Chris Mack, Louisville = Done

Chris Mack lost his players, then he lost his job. Louisville wasn’t nearly as bad as some of the teams on this list, but at Louisville being mediocre at basketball doesn’t fly. Mike Pegues is the interim coach and isn’t likely remain the head coach.
