Pittsburgh had a great season. They won 11 games, they beat Clemson, and won the ACC.
No one can’t take away what they accomplished, but it’s not what it could have been. It could have been a truly magical season with a win in the Chick-Fila Peach bowl. That would have been a 12 win, top 10 season.
It was right there for taking up 21-10 in the 4th quarter, and then a disastrous 3rd and 1 call came.
I was so excited to see a team line up in a power formation under center in short yardage. Then Pitt tosses it 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and the Panthers were done.
The defense couldn’t make a play, and a promising final drive end in an interception.
Pittsburgh probably wins this game if QB Kenny Pickett plays, but it doesn’t really matter. He didn’t play, and Pitt ended up with a 3rd string QB trying to beat Michigan State. The Spartans were without their star RB Kenneth Walker too.
At the end of the day, Pitt missed a golden opportunity for something truly magical and historic. Those chances don’t come often, and who knows when Pitt will get that chance again. With the state of the ACC Coastal, they’ll still be in the mix there, but your favorites for the ACC next year will be Clemson and NC State.
The ACC Title will always be there, and lots of great memories. It just could have been a little bit more.
