The Wake Forest University Demon Deacon Football Team is 5-0

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.

The Wake Forest University football team is undefeated.  The Demon Deacons are 5-0.

Why are the Demon Deacons undefeated?  This year, Wake Forest returned 20 of 22 starters.

Why are the Demon Deacons undefeated?  They have a coach in Dave Clawson who is a proven program builder.  He won at Fordham.  He won at Richmond.  He won at Bowling Green State University.  And he’s winning at Wake Forest.  These are not easy schools to win at.

Why are the Demon Deacons undefeated?  Given the parity in the ACC (not everyone can recruit like Clemson), if your football team plays sound, fundamental football, then there’s a good opportunity to win a lot of games.  Wake Forest is one of the top 18 least penalized teams in the countryWake Forest is in the top 6 in the USA regarding turnover marginWake Forest’s red zone defense is in the nation’s top 4.

Wake Forest isn’t setting the world on fire with their total offense and total defense – but they aren’t breaking – they are holding and winning, which says a lot about the experience on their team.

I’ve had this conversation before with @TalkinACCSports, but half the ordeal of ACC play is being sound fundamentally – I’m a huge believer in that gets you at least 50-75% if your wins.  Unless you are playing a massively talented team (A level recruits), being a sound, fundamental football team can get you quite a few wins in the ACC.

Let’s take a look the Demon Deacons football schedule for the rest of the season:

  1. October 9, 2021 – Wake Forest at Syracuse – I think that’s a likely win.
  2. October 16, 2021 – Bye
  3. October 23, 2021 – Wake Forest at Army – I think that’s a likely win as Wake Forest will get a bye week to prepare for Army’s offense.
  4. October 30, 2021 – at Duke – I think Wake Forest is going to drill Duke.  I think Wake Forest will be 8-0 after the Duke game.
  5. November 6, 2021 – Wake Forest at North Carolina – We know this is going to be a high scoring game with North Carolina.  I know what I’m getting with Wake Forest (I never know what I’m getting with North Carolina – small chance of a North Carolina win).  I’ll call a Wake Forest victory here.  9-0.
  6. November 13, 2021 – NC State at Wake Forest.  Here’s the deal.  NC State has lost 3 of the last 4 in this series.  The game is in Winston-Salem.  Wake is bound to feel some pressure here on Senior Day – so I’ll call an NC State win – but would not be surprised to see a Wake Forest win.  Deacs at 9-1.
  7. November 20, 2021 – Wake Forest at Clemson – Clemson should get their act together on offense.  I say should.  We’ll call a Clemson win.  Deacs at 9-2.
  8. November 27, 2021 – Wake Forest at Boston College.  I do believe that Wake Forest will win on the road to close the season (but this is a 50/50 game).  Therefore, Wake Forest can end up 10-2

Am I over the top?  Maybe.  I think the worse case scenario for Wake Forest is 8-4 – and I think the Deacs could end up 10-2.  10-2 would get the Deacs a good bowl game.

And then people are going to start calling Dave Clawson – unless Wake Forest decides to give him double his current salary.
