Following a discouraging loss to Northern Illinois to open the season, Geoff Collins said this…
“So it is not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. And we’re just going to keep fighting, keep building, keep working and it’s going to click and it’s going to take over and when it does, it’s going to be really good.”
Frankly Collins sounded like he was seeing something else that had the rest of us scratching our heads.
Well to his credit and his staff’s credit, it certainly looks like he had a better pulse on his team than we thought. Saturday night Georgia Tech trounced 21st ranked North Carolina 45-22. This win was no fluke. The Yellow Jackets looked fast, athletic, and executed as well as they ever have under Collins. The Heels opened the season with a loss to Virginia Tech, but scored nearly 120 points beating a Georgia State team that almost knocked off Auburn, and ACC foe Virginia.
The biggest knock on Georgia Tech under Collins is they just didn’t play sound football. Against UNC, the tackling was crisp and scheme well executed. Jeff Sims looked like an All-ACC player. That’s what he can do when takes care of the football, and makes good decisions. He’s athleticism and raw ability are obvious.
Now Georgia Tech’s season, where the goal is to make a bowl suddenly is back on schedule The NIU loss wasn’t expected, but neither was this win. At 2-2, and a wide open ACC Coastal, the goal is back in play.
Pittsburgh next week becomes a pivotal game in the Coastal Division, and for Georgia Tech’s bowl chances. Who would have thought that after the NIU loss? I suppose Collins did, and the eternal optimist now has something to build on.
