In a year where who will the ACC’s biggest challenger to Clemson is a clear question, why not NC State?
Miami highly ranked has spent that last year, getting plastered by every good team they played. North Carolina had an opportunity in Blacksburg in week 1, and promptly face-planted at Virginia Tech.
The Hokies certainly warrant consideration after their win over the Tar Heels, but we’ll know more about them in the next 2 weeks after they play Middle Tennessee State and West Virginia whether they can validate that victory.
Boston College gets to prove themselves when Missouri comes calling at the end of the month.
NC State can stake their claim this week at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs frankly aren’t good. It took a frantic comeback to defeat Louisiana Tech in week 1, and they are picked to finish near the bottom of the SEC.
Dave Doeren has built consistency in the Wolfpack program. At least 7 wins every year since 2013 but twice. There hasn’t been a top 20 finish though. There hasn’t been a 10 win season, and there are scant few OOC signature victories. I’m not sure if Mississippi State really constitutes a signature victory. The reality is probably not, but beating an SEC opponent on the road not named Vanderbilt at least raises an eyebrow.
If NC State is truly a top 25 caliber team ready to take a step in their program’s growth, they’ll go into Starkville and take care of business.
