North Carolina
There hasn’t been this much buzz surrounding the North Carolina football program since the first time Mack Brown was in Chapel Hill. In his second go around Mack Brown has expectations through the roof as the Heels are a consensus top 15 pre-season team. The Heels have a Heisman Trophy contender at QB in Sam Howell, recruiting is going well, and optimism abounds. The question is are the Tar Heels ready for the big time?
Will Go 11-1 (7-1) if:
If the defense can start matching the offense. In the Tar Heels 4 losses last year, they gave up over 30 points in every loss. The Heels lost a lot of offensive talent off last year’s team, but the player that makes it go is QB Sam Howell. He’s back, and the offense shouldn’t see much drop off. For the Heels to reach their potential though, the defense can’t rank 58th again with a pass defense in the 80s. The schedule isn’t easy, but it isn’t daunting either. There’s a game at Notre Dame, and at NC State. Miami is a home game, but the Heels pummeled them last year. If UNC gets by at Virginia Tech, they could be 6-0 before they face Miami.
Will Go 7-5 (4-4) if:
The Heels lose their opening game to Virginia Tech. I’d be concerned if the Heels lose this game, because a top 15 team doesn’t blow this one. This is a tricky opener, but one a good team wins. Certainly Notre Dame, Miami, and NC State are good enough to beat UNC. Remember last year when the Heels went to Florida State with a top 5 ranking, and lost to a train wreck of a FSU team? A suspect defense with loads of talented but unproven skill position players can lose a couple of games they shouldn’t. Suddenly a season of expectations could go sideways.
