Details of the ACC, Pac 12, Big 10 alliance could come soon says CBSSports.com
Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic reports the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 are “expected to make a formal announcement about their alignment soon, perhaps as early as next week.”
Of course we are all wondering what does that mean exactly? Here is a good breakdown from @ADavidHaleJoint
Single biggest thing I’d tell people re: the Alliance: It’s not JUST about UT/Okla/SEC. Look at the landscape holistically. Alston, NIL, playoff expansion, player compensation, TV deals coming in P12/B1G, the utter disintegration of the NCAA… it’s about who designs the future. https://t.co/RkRmovMctQ

It’s prob best to think of what’s happening in CFB through 3 prisms: Short, medium & long term.
Short-term, we’re deciding who’ll do the deciding.
Mid-term, what do we want the future to look like & how to get there?
Long-term, who’ll succeed in new world & who won’t/can’t.

I think this is mostly true — at least in a micro sense. All teams are not going to agree on all things. Said one AD: “We’re going to have be prepared for a lot of 8-6 votes.” BUT… nothing brings folks together like a common enemy. https://t.co/9JQnUxfN74

As I said last week w/“alliance” talk heating up… set your expectations low in the short term here. I’ve been told by multiple ADs that “there is no financial component” to the convos so far and “no one is tearing up future schedule contracts” yet. Talks are “philosophical.”

So you get the picture – don’t expect anything earth shattering right away, but a counter to the the SEC is definitely in the works.
From an ACC Perspective @MarkEnnis makes a very interesting point.
To me the most interesting thing is that the ACC is entirely an ESPN partner. Like the SEC. Seems like they’d be easy for ESPN to peel off from the alliance with some sweetening of the pot.

The SEC is an ESPN property and so is the ACC. The ACC is locked into long term deals with ESPN, with Notre Dame only a wishlist item for the conference at this point. The ACC didn’t have a lot of leverage, but ACC Commissioner Jim Phillip’s may have found some.
By forming an alliance the ACC is now an important component to the future of the landscape of college athletics.
Certainly better than if they were alone. I
If ESPN has interests that the ACC can influence they are much better positioned to do so.
They playoffs are coming up pretty soon, and if ESPN wants them instead of them going to FOX or some other network – then you get the idea.
Everything comes with a price.
