When it comes to national titles, since 2013 it’s the ACC’s and SEC’s world and the rest of college athletics is just playing in it. 32 National Titles handed out in the Big 4 Sports, and 16 are from ACC and SEC schools.
The ACC is the only conference with national titles all 4 major sports (Football, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, and Baseball) since 2013. Not even the SEC can match that statistic. That’s a significant accomplishment for a conference that won only 2 from 2006-2012.
Those were the men’s basketball titles of UNC – 2009, and Duke -2010.
The ACC and SEC lead all conferences with 8 titles in these 4 sports. The AAC (led by UCONN women’s basketball with 4) are second with 5 national titles. The Big 10, Pac 12, and Big 12 have a together 6 national titles in this time. One can argue the ACC is the biggest conference at 15 teams in these sports other than football, but I will counter that with there are 36 teams in the Big 10, Pac 12, and Big 12 across 3 different regions and the ACC has 2 more titles than those 3 conferences combined.
It’s of particular embarrassment to a conference as well off financially as the Big 10 that their only national title in a Big 4 sport since 2013 was way back in 2014 with Ohio State’s national championship.
Let’s be honest, all that money and no hardware for the Big 10.
We wrote a few years back about the ACC being in the middle of a golden age of their major sports.
Is it still there after a winless bowl season, and one of the poorer college basketball season’s in recent memory? The NCAA women’s tournament did not have a team from the ACC in Final 4. The ACC needs to rebound. There’s no question.
Let’s not forget though, in 2018 the Florida State women won the NCAA softball title in that growing sport.
The number of teams appearing in national title games, without winning the title is noteworthy too.
Football – Clemson 2015, 2019
Men’s Basketball – UNC 2016
Women’s Basketball – Notre Dame 2014, 2015, and 2019; Syracuse 2016
Baseball – Virginia 2014
That’s a national title participant in 16 of the last 32 national title games for the ACC.
