Each ACC team’s path to the NCAA Tournament (updated 3/2/2021)

With less than 2 weeks left before Selection Sunday, it’s time to take an in-depth look at each ACC team’s path to the NCAA tournament before the weekend’s games. There’s been plenty of recent shakeup.

We’re still a little to far away to say what will be required in the ACCT to make the field. This is what is needed to be a lock prior to then.

LOCKS

Florida State 14-4 (10-3)

Virginia 16-6 (12-4)

Virginia Tech 15-5 (9-4)

Clemson 15-5 (9-5)

Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Clemson are just working on seeding at this point. The ACC #1 seed is still up for grabs, and so are the precious double BYEs.

ALMOST a LOCK

Louisville 13-5 (8-4)

Louisville lost their game with Virginia Tech. They finish the year with Virginia. Even a loss Louisville is probably fine, but a win makes them a lock prior to the ACCT.

Georgia Tech 14-8 (10-6)

Georgia Tech ended the curse of Duke with a gritty OT win. All they have to do is beat a reeling Wake Forest team Friday and they will be dancing. Georgia Tech’s work is not done. They need to approach the Deacs with the same focus they’ve had since the loss to Clemson.

STILL a REALISTIC PATH

North Carolina 15-9 (9-6)

North Carolina went from nearly a lock to bubble in a week they beat Florida State. That takes some effort. Losses to Marquette and Syracuse sandwich the win over FSU. UNC still controls their own destiny, and beating Duke probably gets them in the Big Dance. Lose and suddenly the Heels will need some ACCT wins.

WINNING OUT REQUIRED

NC State 12-9 (8-8)

NC State pulled out a stunning win at Virginia then beat Pittsburgh, and looking at their schedule – running the table is not out of the question. They head to Notre Dame, and then Virginia Tech at home. If they win the next two, 14-9 (10-8) is going to get them a hard NCAA look.

FORGET IT

Duke 11-10 (9-8)

Syracuse 14-8 (8-7)

Notre Dame 9-13 (6-10)

Pittsburgh 10-10 (6-9)

Wake Forest 6-14 (3-14)

Miami 7-16 (3-15)

Boston College 4-13 (2-9)

Even a win over UNC Saturday won’t get Duke into the NCAAs, but a loss will require an ACCT title. A win Saturday, and they can make the field with a run to the finals. Syracuse is in the same boat. If they beat Clemson, they aren’t in the dance, but it helps. Duke and Syracuse still have a lot to play for. Everyone else needs a miracle ACCT run.
