Jordan Usher has been Georgia Tech’s unsung star.

After today’s 84-77 win over Syracuse, Georgia Tech moved to 13-8 (9-6). They are in position to control their own destiny to the NCAA tournament. We’ll be looking more closely at that in another post today where the Jackets stand exactly.

One of the reasons Georgia Tech is currently on a 4 game winning streak is the play of Jordan Usher. Jose Alvarado is the player that makes the Jackets go. He’s the QB of team as the PG. Moses Wright is Georgia Tech’s primary interior threat. Michael Devoe is the perimeter specialist and Alvarado’s backcourt mate. You always need a glue guy though.

The glue guy for the Yellow Jackets is Jordan Usher.

Last year it was clear Usher was athletic and high energy, but often played out of control and had a tendency to turn the ball over.

This year he has become the Jackets most versatile player. He knocks down perimeter shots, can drive to the lane, and defend. At 6-7 he’s the one Georgia Tech player that can go inside out. His FG and 3 point shooting are both up nearly 10% over last year, with an almost 1 assist improvement from last year.

Saturday in a game where Jose Alvarado scored only 4 points and fouled out, Usher had the stat-line that defines his importance to Georgia Tech – 19 Points 7 Rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. He was often the facilitator to Georgia Tech breaking down the Syracuse zone.

Usher has flown a little bit under the radar among the Georgia Tech stars, but he shouldn’t.

The USC transfer is a having a strong second season with the Yellow Jackets, and a big reason why Georgia Tech has a shot at the NCAA tournament.
