Each ACC team’s path to the NCAA Tournament (updated 2/28/2021)

With just a 2 weeks left before Selection Sunday, it’s time to take an in-depth look at each ACC team’s path to the NCAA tournament before the weekend’s games. There’s been plenty of recent shakeup.

We’re still a little to far away to say what will be required in the ACCT to make the field. This is what is needed to be a lock prior to then.

LOCKS

Florida State 14-4 (10-3)

Virginia 15-6 (11-4)

Virginia Tech 15-5 (9-4)

Clemson 15-5 (9-5)

Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Clemson are just working on seeding at this point. Florida State’s took a hit with a flat performance at UNC.

ALMOST a LOCK

Louisville 13-5 (8-4)

Louisville got a monster, I mean absolute monster win at Duke. Louisville still has a tough finish with Virginia Tech and Virginia, but if they split they are in very good NCAA position.

North Carolina 15-8 (9-5)

North Carolina left for dead after an ugly Marquette loss, then came up with their biggest win of the season by knocking off Florida State Saturday. Like Louisville, they don’t have an easy finish either with a game at Syracuse and then hosting erratic Duke. A split should land them in the NCAAs though.

STILL a REALISTIC PATH

Georgia Tech 13-8 (9-6)

Georgia Tech officially ended Syracuse’s realistic NCAA hopes with a 84-77 win. A split over Duke and Wake Forest will leave The Yellow Jackets 14-9 (10-7) which probably gets them in the Big Dance, but it’s not closer to a guarantee like Louisville or UNC. The Jackets win both, and they are assured of a bid.

WINNING OUT REQUIRED

Duke 11-9 (9-7)

Duke picked the wrong time to lose a critical game at home by going down to Louisville. With road games at Georgia Tech and UNC, Duke must sweep both which honestly doesn’t seem likely. A split would leave Duke 12-10 (10-8) which simply won’t be enough to secure a bid prior to the ACCT.

NC State 12-9 (8-8)

NC State pulled out a stunning win at Virginia then beat Pittsburgh, and looking at their schedule – running the table is not out of the question. They head to Notre Dame, and then Virginia Tech at home. If they win the next two, 14-9 (10-8) is going to get them a hard NCAA look.

FORGET IT

Syracuse 13-8 (7-7)

Notre Dame 9-13 (6-10)

Pittsburgh 9-10 (5-9)

Wake Forest 6-13 (3-13)

Miami 7-15 (3-14)

Boston College 4-13 (2-9)

Add Syracuse to the list of teams which can’t get to the NCAA tournament no matter what they do. That’s what losing both games to Duke and Georgia Tech will do to you this past week. If they do beat UNC and Clemson at home though to get to 15-8 (9-7), they wouldn’t need to win the ACCT to get into the NCAAs, so a strong finish is still pretty important.
