Who’s the early season leader for ACC Basketball Coach of the Year?

#StayHealthy and practice social distancing

Like we did with College Football, where we periodically checked in on the ACC COY race we are going to the same with College Basketball. It should have been NC State’s Dave Doeren in the fall, but the ACC media didn’t agree. Will they agree this time? Who are the contenders?

Mike Young – Virginia Tech

The Hokies were picked to finish 11th in ACC. Mike Young currently has them in the ACC top 5 with a solid 8-2 (2-1) record. The win over Villanova is the best win out of conference for any ACC team, and they own another ranked win over Clemson. Transfer Keve Aluma might be the player of the year in the ACC at the moment. The Hokies have been very consistent in a chaotic season with only a 20 point home loss to Penn State leaving heads being scratched. This looks like a NCAA team.

Chris Mack  – Louisville

Louisville was picked as a top 5 ACC team, and currently are an undefeated 3-0 in the ACC to go along with an 8-1 record. Louisville has wins over Seton Hall, Kentucky, and is the only ACC loss for Virginia Tech. This was done with major roster turnover including the departure of star Jordan Nwora. Chris Mack has the Cardinals among the top teams in the ACC and I expect they’ll stay there through the course of the season.

Brad Brownell – Clemson

We always wondered Brad Brownell could do if he had talent at Clemson. He could always coach, but he just didn’t have a lot of high quality players. He does this year, and Clemson has been the ACC’s best most consistent team so far this season. They were picked to finish 10th in the ACC, and currently sit at 9-1 (3-1) and in the top 25. They are ranked in the top 10 nationally in defense.

Leader – Brad Brownell

No ACC team has a better collection of OOC wins than Clemson. They have non-conference wins over Purdue, Maryland, Mississippi State and Alabama. There’s a win over Florida State too. Clemson is athletic, deep and they play great defense. Brownell like every coach in the country is dealing with stoppages, testing, and no real home court advantages. Brownell has done a great job in the early going in what could turn out to be his best team ever at Clemson.
