Georgia Tech still can’t quite turn the corner

Georgia Tech has one more game left on their schedule. It’s the top 10 ranked Miami Hurricanes. For the sake of argument, we’ll say Georgia Tech probably isn’t going to win that game.

Thursday’s night game with Pittsburgh was Georgia Tech’s last realistic chance at a win this year. The Yellow Jackets flopped in a poorly played sloppy effort where a 5-5 Pitt team manhandled Georgia Tech at both lines of scrimmage. A win would have earned Geoff Collins the benefit of the doubt going into next season that progress was being made even with only a 4 win season.

That didn’t happen as Georgia Tech wilted in a 34-20 loss where the Jackets made Pittsburgh RB Vincent Davis look like Barry Sanders.

It was another  penalty riddled sloppy effort that’s become the identity of Geoff Collins football. Over and over week after week, Georgia Tech incurs a ton penalties. It happened again Thursday night.

Georgia Tech will likely finish the season 3-8, after winning 3 games the previous season.

Are the Jackets better?

Offensively yes. Last year the offense was completely dysfunctional through the 1st half of the year, and still struggled most of the 2nd half of the year. This year Georgia Tech had 2 games where they scored more than 45 points. Jeff Sims showed plenty of raw ability, and he is starting to turn that corner into a really nice QB that Georgia Tech can build around.

The defense  is ranked somewhere in the 100s, and needs a serious upgrade of talent.

Recruiting is going pretty well, but you are what your record is and Georgia Tech’s 3 wins were over Florida State, Duke, and Louisville. Those are three of the four worst teams in the ACC. The Jackets lost to Syracuse and were the Orange’s only win.

What we know is Georgia Tech is still closer to the bottom of the ACC than the middle. They aren’t the worst team in the ACC. Jeff Sims and RB Jahmyr Gibbs are exciting freshman players.

I can’t say Collins won’t eventually turn Georgia Tech around, but I can’t quite say he will either at this point.

He did lose it with the refs tonight, so there may be hope for him yet.

The Handshake with Pat Narduzzi was something.  I’m not sure what Narduzzi did.

I’m guessing Collins was still fuming about the refs which is good to see from him.
