Instant Reaction : Clemson should not reschedule game with Florida State

Saturday morning, Florida State cancelled their game with Clemson that was scheduled to kickoff at noon. The reason was Clemson had 1 positive COVID test to a backup lineman that travelled with the team.

While I found the decision curious, it was Florida State’s decision out of an abundance of caution.

What’s done is done, and the FSU program felt it was a risk. It is certainly their right to cancel the game. Though I wonder if records and circumstances had been opposite, would FSU have played today? Of course we’ll never know.

David Hale makes a good point, that FSU didn’t take this decision lightly though.

That said FSU officials appears to be pushing for a December 12th rescheduled game.

If I am the Clemson program, it’s about risk mitigation. I don’t play the game. FSU felt Saturday was too risky for their student athletes. The same can be said for Clemson with a rescheduled game. The Tigers will likely be preparing for an ACCCG with a top 5 Notre Dame team. The game will have playoff implications. Assuming Clemson beats Pitt and Virginia Tech, they must win the ACCCG to make the playoffs.

Depleted and let’s face it, a very bad Florida State team offers no benefit for Clemson to play. Clemson would beat FSU, and by probably an extremely wide margin. The only thing that can happen to Clemson is that someone gets hurt. In 2020 rescheduling a game with Florida State is largely equivalent to rescheduling a game with Alcorn State. It would be nothing more than a glorified scrimmage for Clemson.

The ACC Tiebreak protocols account for different number of ACC conference games,  and as Clemson already beat Miami – yea no reason to reschedule the game from the Clemson side.
