NC State win over Pitt brings hope to season.

Whether you think this was a case of Pitt being same ole inconsistent Pitt or not, NC State was the better team today in their upset victory. I had a lively debate with @JamesIV1978 on whether Pitt laid an egg, but the undeniable fact is NC State played their best game of the year. You won’t find many that didn’t think Pat Narduzzi had one of his best most talented Pitt defenses, and NC State and QB Devin Leary carved it to pieces.

Against Pitt, Leary was 28 for 44 with 336 yards and 4 TD passes. Down 29-24 with under 2 minutes and no timeouts, the sophomore calmly marched NC State down the field to score the game winning touchdown.

NC State’s defense is still a work in progress. They gave up more than 40 points in their first two games, and over 500 yards of offense today, but NC State has worked themselves to a 2-1 start, and the season outlook brings hope.

Coming off a 2019 season where NC State was the ACC’s worst team, Dave Doeren was beginning to feel some heat. While it’s doubtful few if any coaches get fired this year because of the financial constraints brought by the COVID virus, Doeren needed to show something this year or face an uncomfortable 2021.

When you look at the rest of the NC State schedule, only against Miami and UNC will the Wolfpack be decided underdogs. The jury is still out on UNC as well. NC State will be considerable favorites at the moment against Duke, FSU, Liberty, and Georgia Tech. Virginia and Syracuse are no worse than toss ups. I’m not sure NC State is equipped enough defensively to win all of their last 6 games, but 4 maybe 5?

I don’t see why not.

That would land NC State somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 or 7 wins this season and a winning record.

WR Emeka Emezie had a field day against Pitt, and the Panther D had no answer for TE Cary Angeline who caught 2 TD passes. We called Angeline one of the best TE’s in the ACC and he’s lived up to that.

With Leary in command, this NC State passing offense has the potential to cause a lot of problems in the ACC this year.

That’s what a road victory as double digit underdog can do for you. Let’s see if NC State continues to build on it.
