National Media darlings following an upset win at Florida State, Georgia Tech and Geoff Collins were winning national awards, Collins was getting interviewed and life was good for the Jackets. Two weeks later, and it’s evident that win may have been more smoke and mirrors than real substance. Blowout losses to UCF (acceptable) and Syracuse (unacceptable) have left Georgia Tech reeling and looking very much like one of the worst teams in the ACC they were predicted to be.
Frankly what has been surprising has the been the regression of QB Jeff Sims, the incredibly undisciplined play, and the worst place kicking I’ve ever seen at the power 5 level.
As much credit was given to Collins early, blame must be laid now.
COVID is something every team is dealing with and shouldn’t be used as an excuse.
The stats are as ugly you’d imagine. Sims has thrown 8 interceptions in just 3 games. His game against Syracuse resulted in 4. He makes plays where his talent is clear. You can’t give up on a freshman, but I expected to see signs of improvement not regression.
Georgia Tech had double the penalties of Syracuse. 15 to 7, and most were of the offsides, formation shift variety. In game 1 this is understandable, not game 3.
The place kicking continues to be a disaster as Georgia Tech is 1 for 5 in FGs, and with at least 4 blocks between XPs and FGs.
Each of this areas speaks to a lack of attention by Collins and staff. Certainly the talent base is improving. The offense can put up yards between the 20s. The defense has had nice moments, and stretches of good play while being extremely young, but as @MattThompson87 says
You can’t be a:
-penalty machine
-turnover machine
-horrible in the red zone
-horrible in the kicking game
and win.Continue to play this way, and FSU will be the only win of the season.

This is the fear, and it should be a real fear for Collins and staff. If Georgia Tech doesn’t button up their mistake prone sloppy play, which I put largely on the coaching staff, the season could spiral into a nightmare very quickly.
The sloppy play can no longer be argued away as part of the triple option transition, not in game 3 against a previously winless Syracuse. This is about coaching. Syracuse was ready to play and has improved since game one. Georgia Tech has gotten worse since their opening game.
