When Division III Bowdoin College chose to cancel their fall sports on June 22, most of us didn’t even notice. I wasn’t even aware Bowdoin College was in Maine until today.
When this announcement was made, it was a wake up call.

I write to inform you that due to the COVID-19 virus, Morehouse College will not participate in intercollegiate athletic competition sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) this upcoming Fall. This will affect our cross country and football sponsored athletic teams
Morehouse College is the first school that offers athletic scholarships to cancel their fall sports due to COVID-19.
Two weeks ago, we wrote the next 6 weeks would be critical for the return of fall sports. Not only are COVID-19 cases not plateauing, they are surging in several states. Morehouse College saw the trend and made a decision. Even at a smaller school like Morehouse, cancelling their fall sports is a significant decision, and certainly wasn’t taken without ample consideration.
We now have 4 weeks left in my 6 week timeline, and Morehouse College is the first scholarship school domino to fall. Don’t think for a minute it can’t happen to other schools or at the power 5 level. If season started today, Florida State and NC State games at Syracuse would require a 2 week quarantine, because New York has restricted travelers from Florida and North Carolina. Having a fall sports season, with those kind of restrictions currently in place would be impossible to manage.
There’s still time, but with each passing week, and COVID-19 cases that aren’t decreasing the threat of no fall collegiate sports grows a little more.
