The Status of Sports Gambling in #ACC Country

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.  Many of us are missing the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament, the NCAA Frozen Four (e.g. the Men’s Ice Hockey Final Four), NCAA track and field, NCAA baseball and softball, and NCAA lacrosse.

As we look to the future of college sports this year, it’s always fun to dream of placing a bet and winning some big cash with a sports book.  If you recall, in May 2018, the Supreme Court struck down a law that outlawed sports betting outside of Nevada.  You can credit Chris Christie, the Governor of New Jersey, for that legal challenge.   Below, you can see a status of sports betting in ACC country states (I based my table after the ESPN article here):

State Sports Gambling Authorized On Deck Moving Towards Legislation  Notes/Commentary/Analysis
Pennsylvania X You can bet on lots of sports in Pennsylvania.
New York  X Sports betting is authorized in NY at the four upstate private brick and mortar casinosNew York lawmakers are still trying to pass online betting.
Washington, DC (Yes, DC hosted the ACC tournament before, so we included DC in this table.  Plus, it’s very close to Virginia) X In Washington, DC, sports betting might be ready by the Washington Nationals Season Opener Day.  Legislation has passed, but regulations are still being written to implement the legislation. However, you can’t bet on local college teams (e.g. Georgetown or George Washington).  Now I speak of DC here for personal reasons because I’m a Georgetown alumnus.
North Carolina X (Kind of, but not really.  Tip of the hat to CasinoInsider.com) Interesting take here from CasinoInsider.com.  Like there are two places right now where you can place sports bets in North Carolina, but these are a long way from the major North Carolina metro areas. I agree with them – it’s like, yes, we’re allowing sports betting, but you have to drive hours and hours if you want to do it.  Not fun.
Kentucky X Kentucky better get it together on this before Indiana takes all the cash from Louisville and Lexington residents.  And it looks like Kentucky lawmakers are trying to kill the bill.
Massachusetts  X Looks to me like Massashusetts state senators are holding this up in committee right now or waiting for the House to act.  The senators might be reserving their right to act on the gambling bills so that the session ends before acting on them.
Virginia  X Virginia is very close to on-deck status – and this would not have happened without a change in the legislature.  Two bills are headed for the Governor’s deskand he has to act on them by April 6, 2020. Bettors will not be permitted to bet on Commonwealth of Virginia  higher education sports teams.
South Carolina  X This might be a no way in hell situation.  The only way South Carolina gets sports betting is if it can be demonstrated that other states are take the cash of its residents.
Florida X Looks like Florida Lawmakers are going to have to try next year.
Georgia X Georgia sports betting bills failed to meet crossover day (that’s basically the last day that a bill can be voted on in one chamber and advance to the next).  Georgia legislators will have to try again next year.

I had some twitter conversations with a few of my Twitter brethren now how this would happen in North Carolina, Florida, and Kentucky.  Check these tweets out below:

So basically, we’ve come to the conclusion that if you have a Native American tribe that operates casinos in your state, or a nationwide chain (like Harrah’s), there eventually will be a casino that has sports betting.  You may or may not have online betting associated with a particular casino in that state – and you likely won’t be betting on the state’s teams in that state.

The promise of sports betting could be interesting in Virginia because the casinos will be in Norfolk, Danville, Richmond, Portsmouth, and Bristol. Many of these cities are close to ACC country.  I think you could find many in-state and out-of-state residents who would visit the casinos are part of a tourist visit.   New York City and Pittsburgh would also provide nice tourist opportunities with the opportunity to place a sports bet on your favorite ACC team.

Anyway, that’s the status of sports betting in ACC country.
